It may not have been the biggest announcement of today's E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, but there's a faithful fandom that's very excited to hear about the return of Advance Wars. Near the end of the Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that Nintendo will be bringing back the original Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2. The pair will be bundled together, remade, and rereleased on Nintendo Switch.

Introducing Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp, bundled remakes of the first two Advance Wars' campaigns. Nintendo is opening pre-orders for the compilation today, but the game won't officially arrive until December 3 later this year. Considering how long Advance Wars fans have been waiting for the series to continue, a few extra months shouldn't be too torturous.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is not a new game, but it is more than just a re-release. Both the first Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising are being remade with completely new visuals. "Reimagined and rebuilt from the ground up" is how Nintendo characterizes the remake. And while it certainly looks different than the original games, the style and personality of the originals have clearly been a priority to retain.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp may not be a new game, but it can't be understated how excited fans will be to have the game available on Nintendo Switch. The original two games in the Advance Wars series, Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, were originally released in 2001 and 2003, respectively, for the Game Boy Advance. While Advance Wars 2 was re-released on the Wii U Virtual Console, most modern Nintendo fans have had little to no access to these classic strategy games.

For those new to or unfamiliar with Advance Wars, it's a series of strategy games with turn-based combat. Players take on multiple war scenarios, each with their own unique grid-based map, working to overtake key capture points while also combatting enemy forces across the land, air, and sea. The heart of Advance Wars, however, remains its story. Multiple factions, each made up of unique and charming characters, strive to defend their countries while pushing their aggressors back.

Given the amount of effort that clearly went into these remakes, Advance Wars fans are certain to speculate about the possibility of a sequel. No announcement was made today, but Advance Wars fans are guaranteed to be more hopeful of a proper sequel now than for years going back. Expect more news on Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp later following the Nintendo Direct as it's planned to be shown during Nintendo's E3 2021 Treehouse presentation.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp releases December 3 on Switch.
