While most look at Transformers: War for Cybertron, High Moon Studios' foray into the eternal struggle between the Autobots and the Decepticons, as a break-out success, that assumption is typically in connection with the game's varied single player campaign. Its multiplayer component, on the other hand, is not looked upon in such a reverential light, but High Moon hopes to change that with Fall of Cybertron, their Transformers sequel due out this August.

Talking about War for Cybertron, in connection with Fall, game Director Matt Tieger revealed that his studio wasn't exactly pleased with the way War for Cybertron's multiplayer turned out. Part of that has to do with a lack of character customization, and some of the blame rests with having a community too small to sustain a multiplayer experience.

This time, however, with Fall of Cybertron, Activision is really "getting behind" High Moon and allowing them to push the boundaries, turning the experience "to 11," so to speak. Customization alone — creating your own Transformer variant fit for the multiplayer battlegrounds — could take up to ten hours if the player so desires. And then, of course there are the dozens of ways for players to get their fill in the online arenas.

In all reality, there's a reason that gamers aren't going to be instantly flocking to the multiplayer in Fall of Cybertron, and that's because of the engrossing and diverse single player campaign High Moon has created. Each mission, featuring a different type of gameplay and Transformer, promises to be a completely new experience, whether you're stomping around as Grimlock or calling in airstrikes from Metroplex.

Multiplayer, for some games, is the bread and butter, but for Fall for Cybertron it's the icing on the cake. Still, Activision's support for the multiplayer portion suggests they want to create that sustainable group they were unable to foster with the first game, leading us to believe Transformers has become another flagship franchise for the publisher, right along Call of Duty.

Were you a fan of War for Cybertron's multiplayer modes? Does the prospect of customizing your own Transformer give you enough incentive to try out this game's multiplayer?

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron releases August 21, 2012 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
