According to a recent report, a new Ghostbusters game is being made by Activision for PS4 and Xbox One, and it's set to release alongside the new movie.

The Ghostbusters franchise has been revitalized recently in both video game and film form, and it looks like it's not done yet. According to a report from Retail Merchandiser, a new Ghostbusters game is on its way to current gen systems.

Not much is known about the new Ghostbusters title, except that it's being developed by Activision, and that it's timed to land around the same time as the upcoming Ghostbusters film. While it's quite likely that the new game will be based off the female cast of the new movie, an announcement has not yet been made as to whether that's the case, or if it'll focus on the old team, or even both. However, the report points out that Sony would like to have multiple Ghostbusters-themed products available at a multitude of stores when the film releases. Considering this, it seems to be much more likely that Activision is basing the game off the new cast.

It also makes more sense to focus on the new film's cast rather than the old one, since several Ghostbusters games have been released in recent years based off the original films. The 2009 Ghostbusters game was generally praised for its gameplay and the story written by the original writers of the films. In addition, the Ghostbusters set for Lego Dimensions just recently released, which is essentially a rehash of the original film. Since gamers have plenty to choose if they want to relive the original films in video game form, it's probably time to move on to the new film.

Depending on Activision's attempts, the new Ghostbusters game could be another success, or fail miserably. The spin-off game that followed Atari's Ghostbusters - Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime - was heavily criticized due to its poor gameplay, reused assets, and lack of non-local multiplayer options. Unfortunately, it was a sequel that soured the otherwise-pleasant experience of the first game for many players.

However, Activision had nothing to do with either of the last two Ghostbusters games, so it remains to be seen what their take on the series will be. Activision's game has supposedly been in development since early on in the filming process of the Ghostbusters movie, so hopefully it'll have the polish it needs to be a success.

Activision's Ghostbusters is slated to release around the same time as the film, July 15, 2016, for PS4 and Xbox One.
