In 2008, the PlayStation 3 received firmware 2.40, bringing with it the Trophy system - Sony's answer to Microsoft's Achievements. The PS3 had already been out for two years, and because Trophy support was not made mandatory until 2009, developers did not need to patch legacy titles to incorporate the new reward system.

Next month, Metal Gear Solid 4 will finally receive a Trophy patch, fulfilling a request players have had for years. Nevertheless, some of the PS3's best titles still lack Trophy support, and we've got the five most notable listed here. So sit back, and cross your fingers that these games may someday receive a patch.

Resistance: Fall of Man

Resistance: Fall of Man Trophies

When the PS3 first released in 2006, Resistance: Fall of Man was the system's premiere launch title. The game debuted to positive critical reception, amassing a large and passionate fanbase. It's no surprise then that to this day, gamers still ask for a trophy patch. Unfortunately, developer Insomniac Games has said multiple times that there are no plans to patch the game, simply because of the time and expense involved - not to mention that much of the staff who worked on the game is no longer employed by the studio. It's understandable, but unfortunate for Resistance fans.

Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword Trophies

It's easy to make comparison's between Heavenly Sword and Sony's God of War franchise. Main character Nariko wields a blade that controls similarly to Kratos' weapon of choice, and the emphasis on light and heavy attacks is a God of War trademark. However, it took four years before Kratos made his first appearance on Sony's console, and Heavenly Sword was an admirable substitute. The game looked beautiful, controlled wonderfully, and Nariko herself was a hit with fans. A sequel has been rumored, but is ultimately unlikely with developer Ninja Theory working on the Devil May Cry reboot. A trophy patch could help dry our tears.

Folklore

Folklore Trophies

Folklore is a cult classic if there ever was one. The PS3 title was originally released in 2007 to favorable critical reception, though sadly for both developer Game Republic and its fans, the game didn't perform too well commercially. A follow up was once in the works, but development barely got off the ground due to Folklore's lackluster sales. With the way fans talk about the game, this is certainly a disappointment, especially because Game Republic was planning to incorporate Move support in the sequel.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Ratchet & Clank Trophies

The second game from Insomniac on our list, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was the first Ratchet & Clank game on the PS3, and the first game in series' "Future" story arc. Much like Resistance: Fall of Man, Insomniac has stated that there will not be a Trophy support patch, presumably because of time and cost restraints. Even though the better received Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time comes packed with a full Trophy list, we remain ever hopeful that it will one day become feasible to patch Tools of Destruction.

Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles Trophies

Valkyria Chronicles wasn't just one of the best games of 2008, it's also regarded as one of the best games on the PS3. Sega's tactical role playing game combined a beautiful art style with a great story to create one of the PS3's most memorable experiences. The game's sequel would go on to be a PSP exclusive, while the third game in the trilogy wasn't even released outside of Japan. In order to make up for not localizing Valkyria Chronicles 3, Sega could update the first game with trophy support - though chances are that would only keep disgruntled fans at bay until they remember they still haven't played the third title.

While it's unlikely that any of these games will ever be updated to support trophies, we still remain hopeful. Metal Gear Solid 4 may have been a unique case, but it's proof that there's still a chance for even the oldest games to be patched.
