Nintendo Making a Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL

Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro

A revamped version of the Nintendo 3DS with two circle pads is something that gamers have been expecting ever since the Circle Pad Pro was first revealed. After this past week’s unveiling of the 3DS XL however, it immediately became apparent that those beliefs were false. Instead, gamers were likely going to have to purchase an upgraded circle pad attachment, and today Nintendo has confirmed just that – a larger version of the Circle Pad Pro to fit the super-sized gaming device.

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine features a Q&A with the Big N pertaining to the new 3DS XL, and during this interview it was confirmed that the enlarged handheld will be receiving a uniquely designed Circle Pad Pro. Aside from adding a much needed additional stick, the peripheral should also make the already gargantuan 3DS XL even bulkier, which more or less defeats the purpose of the system being “portable.”

Details on the plastic add-on were not discussed any further during Famitsu‘s time with Nintendo’s representatives, but the peripheral is confirmed for release at some point later this year. Games like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Kid Icarus: Uprising all support the Circle Pad Pro, and are just a few games that would benefit from being played on the 3DS XL’s 90% larger screens.

Despite initial criticism over the 3DS XL’s lack of a second built-in circle pad, the redesign really does look like a great one. Plenty of must-have titles are also en route to the 3D-enabled handheld, so the 3DS XL is looking like the best option for gamers wanting to enjoy the experience on a larger screen.

The Nintendo 3DS XL is scheduled to release in North America on August 19th for the price of $199.99.

  1. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  2. No surprise. Why design the updated system with the second stick when you can update the old add-on as well and sell it for even more money. Why does it seem as if every major company has adopted the concept of just screwing their fans over in the designs of products so they can cram accessories down thier throats? What ever happened to giving customers good products so they keep coming to you?

    • Hey. You don’t have to buy it.

  3. Pass. Until 3DS comes in one piece, will not buy.

  4. The 2nd circle pad is a waste of money and XL didn’t need one. 3DS games are designed for one circle pad play not 2 so making one available divides the fan base and developers.

  5. well, if they made the XL with the sticks built in it would cost more money, and personally, I am fine with having one analog, since a total of 3 games use the add-on, and they work fine without it as well. so why they even made the dual add-on in the first place is a mystery.

    • Indeed i agree… Why make the price more for dual stick compatability for only a few games. Also makes me think there wont be any future games coming out with this dual stick capability which is a little concerning.
