Microsoft has announced they will be releasing a 250GB Xbox 360 hard drive March 15. Sadly, for the time being it is an exclusive accessory to Japan.
“Microsoft is now offering a standalone 250GB Hard Drive in Japan to provide consumers in Japan more storage options for their games and entertainment.”
The hard drive will run for 15, 540 yen, which is roughly $173 US. That is about $100 more expensive than portable USB hard drives of the same size for the PC I might add. Even worse is it is almost as much as buying a whole new Xbox 360 system. I wonder if Microsoft will ever drop the price of their overpriced memory units.

What makes the outrageous price worse is the fact that they’ve completely disabled use of third-party hardware as noted in their legal proceedings with Datel where a Microsoft Xbox update intentionally blocked Datel memory units.
No word if the 250GB HD will make it to North America in the future, but if you have an eBay account you could always buy one from Japan since hard drives are region free.
Do you think Microsoft is over-charging for their accessories?
