Gaming Trends That Disappeared This Generation

Nothing is immortal to the passage of time. This is especially true in the world of gaming, a world of change and advancement at a blistering pace. Look over the horizon, and you’ll see new games and developers and ideas destined to replace the old. Blink, and one generation of consoles is preparing to give way to the next.

So, what video game trends were lost during this modern era? What patterns phased out after the Wii and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have burned through 6-7 years of their momentous life cycles, lying now on the precipice of becoming the Wii U and PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720/Durango/8/Infinity.

We thought of 13. Some, we’re sad to see go. Others sting to be reminded about. But their scope can lie anywhere: a genre; a subject matter; patterns of philosophy, behavior or design.

  1. the world where lets make everyone pay, lets kill co-op by having no single couch play, lets require everyone to stay online, lets destroy split screen, who wants a limited never upgradable console, just get a good pc and be done with it, because lets face it we all love being nickel and dimed to death for micro transactions don’t we. Consoles have become greed garbage and the past gens all had extremely sub par hardware inside!

  3. there are still plenty of escort missions/quests in games, mostly rpg’s and mmorpg’s but they still have them in cod, bf3, splintercell, world of warcraft, and plenty more that im not going to list. also I still play some splitscreen games with my friends and brothers offline, portal,and bleed most recently.

  4. You’ve forgotten a ton more:

    1) Quality Control – Let’s face it, the Eurotrash model of gaming production has become center stage. Constant massive patches and poor utilization of multi-core resources abound.

    2) Finish Products – In the old days, publishers realized well-documented products that were, on the whole, complete and playable right out of the box. Today’s Eurotrash models promote barely playable alphas released at full “professional product official release” prices.

    3) Stand-alone capability – Every Eurotrash game company out there is trending towards release via 3rd party hosts/verifiers/streamers. Odds are good at least a few of your games won’t play unless you are online, and can have every little move you make watched and recorded by someone in the marketing section of a service that had nothing whatsoever to do with the development of the game in question.

    4) Support – Online gaming has taken hold in the marketplace, with the focus on profit above all else. Try getting response from Cryptic or any of a hundred online content developers and you are either going to be ignored (because they already have your money), or put on a lifetime waiting list to the tune of “your feedback is very important to us.”

    5) Logic – Fact is that most of America has sub-par internet connections. Why? Well, if you ask the people who control the lines, they will tell you that the European model won’t work here. In other words, quality in rural areas costs too much money, and that cuts in to profits. Those games that some people can download in 30 minutes or less take a good many Americans so much time that their computer can really be used for nothing else during that period. Some are still not quite downloaded 16+ hours later.
