Nothing is immortal to the passage of time. This is especially true in the world of gaming, a world of change and advancement at a blistering pace. Look over the horizon, and you’ll see new games and developers and ideas destined to replace the old. Blink, and one generation of consoles is preparing to give way to the next.
So, what video game trends were lost during this modern era? What patterns phased out after the Wii and PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have burned through 6-7 years of their momentous life cycles, lying now on the precipice of becoming the Wii U and PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720/Durango/8/Infinity.
We thought of 13. Some, we’re sad to see go. Others sting to be reminded about. But their scope can lie anywhere: a genre; a subject matter; patterns of philosophy, behavior or design.
So have a look. Reminisce or revel. If you think there’s something we missed or have something to say, stick around and let us know in the comments below.

Yeah….that’s why main stream gaming is dying (the future lies with the Indie developers at this point). A slow gradual decline to brain death via homogenization into cookie cutter games to appeal to the masses….rather then more focused titles filling a niche and focusing more on their gameplay and character rather then shiny new bells and whistles or requiring levels of internet support that less then 20% of America has access to, or paying off that blossoming over-kill budget that requires reaching the most people possible to turn a profit.
i f#$%ing hate escort missions. The. Worst. Thing. just awful…
Want to talk about disappeared trends? Think about Tycoon games and Formula 1 management simulators.
This is a terrible article and should be unpublished or have a tag at the top with an apology for being un-researched and almost completely wrong.
These people commenting obviously don’t know what a trend is vs something that is still alive lol
You forgot silent protagonist.
